Opening Exposition: "Yellow Jacket"

ILIOS (GR) - LEIF ELGGREN (SE) - PHILIPPE DAERENDINGER (CH)

Apr 11, 2013

OSLO10

Concert: ILIOS 21:30

„Yellow Jacket“
: The Measurement of The Room or a performative occupation of visual identities. Oslo10 showcases the work of ILIOS (GR), Leif Elggren (SE) and Philippe Daerendinger (Ch) in a group exhibition.

It is to be expected that the sound level of ILIOS’ sound installation will drown out the noise from the nearby construction site. His work literally turns the architectural space into an acoustic experience. During his preparation for his OSLO10 performance, ILIOS took exact measurements of one of the rooms and located frequences that cause this specific room to resonate.
„The unnecessary tyranny of settlements, the needless weight of identity, the unwished despotism of frontiers.“- is the title of an essay in which ILIOS pleads for the absolute experience.

I hereby lay claim to this symbol, sign, icon, the combination of black and yellow, wherever it may appear, in this or any other world, in whatever shape, form, pattern or composition, be it civil or military. I hereby claim to be its originator and owner. (Leif Elggren 1977)

Since 1977 Leif Elggren uses Yellow and Black in different transitory correlations - as a political statement, a metaphorical gesture or a fancy button, „Y+B“ is Leif Eiggren’s „personal“ sample board that is staged in spatial installations, photography and visual compositions. For „Yellow Jacket“ the Swedish artist Leif Elggren shows a new presentation of his „Life Project“ „Y+B“.

Responding to the invitation, Philippe Daerendinger developed a new series of work. With amazing ease he regroups new figurative drawings and plays with the possibilities and absurdities of figurative representation. Quite spontaneously he transforms a sterotypical depiction of people in different situations – resembling Julian Opies's abtract icons. Within this range he opens a field from corporate stereotypes in our every day life to the „simplistic“ practice of drawing.

CONCERT: ILIOS
Active since the early 90′s in sound art and image, ILIOS has been exploring the extremes of sound and image derived phenomena. Through constant change in his sound palette touching and surpassing the limits of the sound spectrum, flirting with opposites from ultra-orthodox silence to ultra-catholic noise ILIOS advocates an anti-career. Some of ILIOS’ recorded output has been described by the media as: “The sound of death” or “The most enervating record imaginable”.
By 2011 ILIOS had performed more than 200 times in various venues and festivals in 30 countries throughout Asia, Europe, Oceania, South and North America, pushing the space and bodily resistances in an endurance test pursuing a heightened state of awareness for the human senses.
Besides his own production ILIOS runs the label Antifrost, featuring editions from internationally renowned artists and musicians (e.g. Francisco Lopez, Daniel Menche, Joe Coley, Alessandro Bossetti, Lasse Marhaug).
ILIOS' concert is the opening event for the new exhibition and concert space, OSLO10. The concert is also a collaboration with the DVSM Symposium on the subject „noise – „The Other“ music“ (http://www.geraeusche.dvsm.de/ ). During the whole Symposium ( April 11th until the end of May) OSLO10 will be presenting a sound installation from ILIOS.

OSLO10 - BAR AB 21:00 / CONCERT 23:00

Koyxen (aka NHK_Koyxen aka Kouhei Matsunaga) grew up in the heart of Japan’s Hip-Hop and Techno scene. Before long he was collaborating with Noise musician Merzbow and forging his sonic palette into his own idiosyncratic language, which he has been expanding to this day. At home in Berlin as much as in Japan, Kouhei has been performing with Doom Metal band Corrupted, the Noise group Boredoms, NHK (together with Toshio Munehiro), as well as painting. Sound artist and friend Aki Onda described him as “an outsider in Hip-Hop as well as an outsider in experimental music”.

NHK'Koyxen: http://koyxen.blogspot.ch/

This concert is also part of the DSVM-Symposium (http://www.geraeusche.dvsm.de/) as well as part of the opening events of the exhibitions and concert space OSLO10.

NEEVO:
For more than 15 years NEEVO travels between clubs, bars and record stores. A DJ, event organiser and free spirit of music, he plays ageless dance music with influences of post-punk, post disco, avantgarde pop, jazz, funk, deeper house and techno, Caribbean and African rhythms. From 90 to 125 bpm, NEEVO focuses the dancefloor. Subtle or demanding with rough edges, never arbitrary or quantifiable.

OSLO10 - DOORS 21:00 / CONCERT 21:30

Mecanation is French multi-instrumentalist and tinkerer Pierre Bastien (who has toured with his selfmade orchestra, Mecanicum) and Thai multimedia artist One Man Nation, aka Marc Chai.

As Mecanation, Pierre Bastien and One Man Nation reiterate Aphex Twin’s broad-mindedness. One Man Nation daringly mixes his advanced electronic loops and processed sounds with the untreated leitmotivs of Bastien’s mechanical sound sculptures, usually improvised on stage without any prior rehearsals. Both musicians gravitate towards the use of both ancient and recent terrestrial sounds to create a myriad of unprecedented combinations, far away from any dogma.

We had to cancle this concert because of personal reason from the musican.

Long-duration performance / installation with waving feedback drones AFTERNOON CONCERT: starting at 3 pm !!CANCLED!!

Tomoko Sauvage, Japanese musician/sound artist based in Paris, works with waterbowls - porcelain bowls of different sizes filled with water and amplified with hydrophones (under-water microphones)*. She plays with different forms of water – drops, waves and bubbles resonating in the bowls as well as audio feedback creating waving drones and natural overtones. Her work explores the delicate balance between controlled and uncontrolled with random percussion of droplets, acoustic characteristics of the space and the fragile tonality created by fluid materials constantly evaporating and moving. Sauvage has been performing, exhibiting and giving workshops in Europe, US, Canada and Japan, often alone but sometimes in collaboration with musicians and choreographers. Her works have been released by and/OAR (US), aposiopèse (BE), dokidoki editions (FR)

At OSLO10 we invite you to stay and enjoy the sounds with some japanese tea.

OSLO 10 DOORS 8 pm CONCERT 9 pm

Fortunately there is a Phill Niblock Retrospective at the Centre d'art contemporain (http://www.circuit.li/) and Musée de l'Elysée (http://www.elysee.ch/) in Lausanne at the moment and we are happy that he has agreed to come to Basel and perform a set of his works live.
Phill Niblock is a minimal-music composer from New York, celebrating his 80th birthday this year. Some refer to him as the „forgotten“ of the minimal music scene. He has been an inherent part of the avantgarde music scene since the 60’s and has influenced many atists including Susan Stenger, Glenn Branca and Lois V Vierk.

Phil Niblock’s work has its roots in the fine arts, beside his musical output he is also an active film-maker. Most frequently he brings both fields together, - as will be the case for his presentation in Basel. He will perform a live set featuring pieces he composed for his film series „Movement of People Working“ (1972 – ongoing), filmed in Japan.
He will be accompanied by Dutch musician Thomas Ankersmit. Ankersmit is a saxophon player, who is lately challenging the fields of electronic music and is deeply engaged with his analog-modular synthesizer.

Both will play respective solo sets as well as performing a duo-set that will feature Phill's latest composition „Sweet Potatoe“ ( a piece for clarinette). We are looking forward to this visit from a legend.

Piotr Kurek & Lutto Lento are two Polish musicians with a penchant for the mysterious, rituals and anarchism. The music of Piotr Kurek is mostly based on Organ- and Keyboard performance. He combines the many different looped organ soundscapes with field recordings, vocals and electronically processed sounds. Lutto Lento aka Lubommir Grzelak is the founder and director of the label Sangoplasmo Records. He is a DJ, musician and sound artist. His surreal soundscapes integrate uncanny field recordings, highlighted by sounds that resemble ancient celtic trumpets.

Eli Keszler (US), Alessandro Bosetti (IT)

May 22, 2012

OSLO 10 DOORS 8 pm CONCERT 9 pm

Eli Keszler, born in Brookline, Massachusetts, is a composer, percussionist and multimedia artist. Keszler began playing drums at the age of 8 and by 12 was already composing his first works. Before focusing on experimental and improvised music he played in rock and hardcore bands, the source of his intensively physical and wild style. He studied with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake at the New England Conservatorium and has worked with the likes of Phill Niblock, Roscoe Mitchell, Joe McPhee, Tony Conrad, Loren Connors, Jandek and many others, relseasing dozens of CDs and LPs on ESP-Disk, REL and PAN. Keszler’s installations involve piano chords of varying length, fixed in different ways and struck by computer-controlled robotic arms. In his own words: “I like to work with raw materials, such as simple sounds, primitive, old or untouched sounds. I try to understand how to use such material without the addition of external pedals or recordings privileging the live performance.”

Alessandro Bosetti is an Italian composer, jazz-saxophonist and sound artist. His interests lie in the musical structure of speech and the anomalies of communication. Bosetti performs his textual/aural compositions both live and in CD or radio formats. His work combines an archeology of sound and composition, while exploiting the misinterpretations arising out of translated texts as creative process. Field researches and interviews constitute the main sources he regularly employs for his abstract compositions, accompanied by electroacoustic and digital sound works.

ÈLG
Laurent Gérard, aka èlg, is drawing since 2003 the sonic equivalent of concentric spirales and labyrinths made of intestines and thujas. Since ten years he uses a wide range of approaches and tools. He firstly worked on song-format manipulations through psychedelic distorsions and quicksands experiments (« Tout Ploie, 2008, Kraak and SS Records »).
Following that he putted together voices and lost sounds in four dimensions collages, the result is a mouvement taking inspiration as much in sound poetry than stand-up comedy or mescalin mix diary (« Capitaine Présent 5 », 2009, Nashazphone). Then he met Ghédalia Tazartès and Jo T. with whom he co-founded the band « Reines d'Angleterre » characterized by living gargoyles singings and improvised electro-acoustic water cascades. Interrested in the idea of injection of psychedelic holes in industrial transes, Jo and èlg founded the duet Opéra Mort at the same time (« dirty and futuristic » said Metamkine).

In his last opus (« Mil Pluton », 2012, Alter / Hundebiss Records), èlg has tried to gather, in a same hypnotic line, esperanto pocket-opera, musique concrète and cosmic pop.

In the past years, he has collaborated, during shows or recordings with Smegma, Jean-Philippe Gross, Ignatz, Jakob Olausson, Tomutonttu, Ghédalia Tazartès, Jo, Duncan Pinhas, Heatsick...

G. MOISSONNIER:
G.Moissonnier is a French artist and experimental musician. He plays A-100 Modular Analog Synthesizer with tapes & field recordings. He aslo plays in the bands Motherfucking, La 6eme Faute, and the unformal ensemble "Faux Amis". He has been promoter of Lyon's legendary venue "Grrrnd Zero" from 2005 to 2010. His music has been released on "zerojardins" his own label that he runs since 2006. His first solo Full lenght release has just been released on the always wonderfull looking tape label from Manchester, Winebox Press.

Past performances include: LUFF Festival Lausanne, 2011; Chuuuuut ! Festival Marseille, 2011; Kill Your Pop Festival Dijon, 2009; Les Urbaines Festival Lausanne, 2007 & shows in various Art Galleries, Clubs... in the UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Czech republic, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland...

RINUS VON ALEBEEK (1956, Heerlen, The Netherlands) is a writer who uses his (environmental) recordings on tape to narrate a story. During the nineties he published two books (pseud. Philip Markus) in his native country. The first novel (De Weg naar Oude God) won the prestigious Geert Jan Lubberhuizen Prijs, a yearly award for the best first novel.

An accidental encounter with electronic and avant garde music in the year 2000 at the Lem festival in Barcelona, and an introduction to the cassette culture gave way to his further artistic development. In the first decade of this century van Alebeek made a thorough research on how to make or manipulate recordings. Thanks to a great number of concerts, sometimes an average of ten in a month, he developed an approach of which people say it is ‘ between noise and pure poetry.’

‘Rinus Van Alebeek is a peculiar observer of reality and an artist who instinctively transforms lo-fi tape recordings into evocative sound poems, being able to create a “détachement” towards the used media, which is a characteristic of the most original artists.’ (Luis Costa, president of Binaural and Associação Cultural de Nodar)

Then in the evening for supper, feelings on toast. We meet as often as possible for brains; bright white blue and purple shades of sprinkle. William Bennett - founding member of the group Whitehouse and one of extreme electronic music's original pioneers - brings his CUT HANDS project to Cafe OTO. Started in 2007 to experiment further with his obscure collection of Ghanaian percussion instruments in free-form work-outs alongside other types of (genuine) sound experimenting, Bennett's eight years of hard graft finally culminated in 2011’s critically acclaimed and best-selling release Afro Noise I – the new Black Mamba album followed on from the eponymous 12” single released by Blackest Ever Black last summer.

CUT HANDS: http://williambennett.blogspot.ch/

Stargate is something in between the pre-sleep Tetris Effect and trance music in slowmotion; soft synth arpeggios smoothly modulate up to brutally danceable supersawed patterns and disintegrate into fragments of tasteful smoothed analog noise.
It's like if you open the doors of an Ibizia club at 5 am and your eyes start twisting, your brain is gently strechted & pitched down at -50 and you are locked into the longest "build-up" ever.
Unique and truly inspired 100% uplifing music from "2095". Watching the world from a thick glass lift that goes to 600th floor...experiencing the hyper-real. Stargate is a brand new project by Lorenzo Senni, owner of Presto!? Rec and Burgerdreams.
He also released an LP under his real name on Editions Mego.

Jagwa Music [EAT]

Jagwa Music [EAT]

Jagwa Music [EAT]

Jul 21, 2013

OSLO10

Imagine a crew of 8 youngsters playing nutty grooves at breakneck speed on traditional & makeshift percussion, a keyboard player going mad on a battered vintage Casio, and three relentless front persons: two breathtaking, spectacular dancers and a charismatic lead vocalist/MC, belting out songs about survival in the urban maze, unfaithful lovers and voodoo.

Shall we call this "Afro-punk" because of the DIY attitude and the creative use of noise and distortion? Or shall we refer to minimal or trance music? To the sexual energy of kuduro and mapouka? To the connection with any socially-conscious Western musical tradition (from rock to hip hop)? Or shall we simply welcome the advent of one of the most exciting bands around, and enjoy their exhilarating combination of pure energy, dazzling virtuosity and great showmanhip?

Jagwa Music are the leading exponent of the Mchiriku style, which originated twenty years ago in the poor suburbs of Dar es Salaam, when cheap Casio keyboards became available, and drew the attention of bands who were playing Chakacha dance music. What happened next is reminiscent of other, by now familiar stories (like that of Konono No.1): Jagwa Music & their peers were immediately attracted by the Casio's lo-fi sound, adopted it, hooked it to vintage amps and megaphones, and the resulting gritty, edgy, distortion-laden sound was rechristened Mchiriku. This new style has been thriving ever since in Tanzania, although it's been deliberately ignored by the media, as it is associated with uhuni (thuggery) and the city’s low life.

Jagwa Music have a large following around Dar es Salaam: almost everybody knows their songs, which relate to everyday issues. Many of their lines have become proverbial, and you can see quotes from their songs painted as slogans to the sides or backs of the local dala dala bus taxis. The songs often contain advice on how to survive in the city, when you're faced with unemployment, oppressive relatives, AIDS and unfaithful girlfriends or husbands, drugs and alcohol.

Jagwa’s members are all living the street life themselves, mostly working in Dar es Salaam's cut-throat private bus-taxi business as dei-waka (unlicensed drivers who jump in when another driver is caught by police, or does not make it to work). Others are manamba, who hustle customers into the buses for a few shillings in return. By mid-day they will have made enough money to keep them going until the next morning, paying for food and some of the other enjoyments they may like. In the afternoon they all meet at their maskani “hangout” under a tree in Mwananyamala close to Jolijo’s, their patron’s little house and restaurant. When they need to rehearse new songs, they convene in Jolijo’s backyard to get it all down. Their performing weekend usually starts on Friday when they suspend the week’s hustle, relax during daytime, and play all-night mchiriku gigs at family celebrations such as weddings around Dar’s suburbs or smaller towns in the vicinity.

Hieroglypic Being

Jamal Moss aka Hieroglypic Being for a exclusive show the first time in Basel, his music is hard to describe: in his own words about his own Record Label:
"Mathematics is the body of sound knowledge centered on such concepts as quantity, music, structure, space, and change – and also the academic discipline that studies them. Mathematics is the first stage of this concept on the academic disciplines of classic house, rhythmic noise, industrial jazz, acid house, ragtime electronics, new age, ambient and classical structures." – J. Moss

Jamal Moss, also known as Hieroglyphic Being, The Sun God, and IAMTHATIAM, is an experimental composer, DJ, and sound artist. His raw, kinetic style is deeply rooted in Chicago’s house and techno scene, where he cut his teeth as a DJ and producer and currently resides. A prolific producer, Moss has over 30 releases on his own Mathematics Recordings and its subsidiaries, and has released on a number of other labels, including Spectral Sound and Klang Elektronik.

Jason Kahn & Bryan Eubanks:

Bryan Eubanks (soprano saxophone, computer, electronics) and Jason Kahn (drum set) have been playing together in various combinations since 2008. For their first extended tour in the U.S. during 2011 Kahn played analog synthesizer and Eubanks computer and his system of open circuit boards and analog electronics. In this configuration they released their debut CD "The Energy(Of)" on the New York experimental music label "Copy For Your Records." Regrouping again for several concerts in Switzerland during 2012 Kahn moved over to drum set and Eubanks added the soprano saxophone, using this to modulate his electronic instruments and adding another acoustic element to their set-up. Together they explore a dialogue using extreme dynamic changes, dense structures and the blurring of electronic and acoustic sound sources.

Sontag Shogun & Dead Rat Orchestra:

Sontag Shogun is an ambient, electronic piano trio comprised of former members from [the] slowest runner [in all the world]. Pooling their influences from modern classical, improvised and ambient musical spheres, they create longform shape-shifting compositions that are at times lush and melodic as well as textural and unpredictable. They have improvised with artists as diverse as Matana Roberts, Tom Carter, Aki Onda as well as a collective of Japanese contemporary video artists.

Transborder.
Rhin.
